I did something similar learning to weld. It was just an arc welder and I didn’t yet understand that it would just start welding if the ground was on the table. I was up in front of the whole class, I did one quick bead of weld, the teacher said I did “fine” and to hand it over to Jimmy so he could try. So i just set everything down on the steel work table. Thank fully the teacher, who’d probably see this happen before just grabbed the ground clamp and threw it on the ground .
